Functional Clothing : Key Features And Definition

WHAT FUNCTIONAL CLOTHING ACTUALLY IS?

Functional clothing is a style of fashion that prioritizes function over form. This means that the clothes are designed to be more comfortable, durable, and practical than other types of clothing. Functional clothing also tends to be made from materials that are more breathable and environmentally friendly than other fabrics. It's also important to note that functional clothing is not limited to just clothes—it can include shoes as well !

The world's greatest designers and textile engineers are working on the manufacturing of superior functional clothing, and enormous sums of money are spent in the development of new and creative materials and technologies. these technologies become widely available and are used in the creation of urban and casual apparel.

What are the key features of functional clothing?

As a foundation, three layers are used:

LAYERING

Base Layer

Absorbs excess moisture from the skin's surface and swiftly transmits it to the outside of the material for evaporation.

Middle Layer

Maintains body heat and keep you warm while also breathing to take moisture even further away from the body.

Outer Layer

it protects you from the external environment (wind and rain) while drawing out moisture evaporated from the body.

Fabric

The membrane is a barrier that lets water out, but it won't let it through; this means it can keep you dry even if you're sweating and makes it able to beat the elements. That's why laminates are more durable than coatings.
The idea for softshell came from the classic 3-layer clothing system, actively promoted in the outdoors for many years. Softshell provides enough water repellence and breathability, which is very important for activities such as skiing, backcountry and snowboarding.

Specs

Breathability :

Breathability indicates that the fabric has a low resistance to moisture evaporation from the surface of skin and the ability to transmit it to the outer fabrics; as a result, moisture departs without leaking extra heat.

Waterproofness :

Literally, all fabrics are "waterproof" until water pressure starts to leak or cut them completely. They are, nevertheless, classified as "water-resistant," "waterproof," and "water-repellent." The results of the so-called "hydrostatic test" are used all over the globe to evaluate the waterproofness of a fabric. A specific gadget provides a pressure corresponding to the pressure of a water column of a certain height, measured in millimetres, in an area of 1 cm2. Eventually, we have waterproof laminates with thicknesses of 10,000, 20,000, and 30,000 mm.
